LINCOLN (SNR) – The “Sweet Dreams” initiative to provided beds for children assisted by Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS) came to a close Dec. 1.
The project received donations to sponsor 10 crib mattresses and 37 single bed sets. CSS typically needs 10 crib mattresses and 40 single bed sets each year, for incoming refugee children, and for families served at St. Gianna Women’s Homes, for women and children escaping domestic violence or pressure to have an abortion.
Project creator Cathy Harrington of the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln thanked all donors for participating in “providing a bed for every sleepyhead.”
“How grateful I am for your physical, financial and spiritual support of this project from the beginning,” she said. “You have truly found ‘room in the inn’ for the most vulnerable.”
The mattresses and bed sets represent nearly $6,000 in donations. Also, 50 fleece pillows were donated to accompany the bed sets, made by the sixth, seventh and eighth grade art students at Cathedral School, under the direction of art teacher Sheri Baumgartner.
The students talked about works of mercy before beginning the project, and prayed for the children who would receive the pillows.
“I hope this is a recurring activity/partnership between Cathedral and CSS,” Baumgartner said, “as I would love to help in this way again.”
