Sacred Art Show open to artists

LINCOLN (SNR) – The “Sacred Art Show and Sale of Nebraska” will be held May 5 and 6 at the John XXIII Diocesan Center, 3700 Sheridan Blvd., Lincoln.

The show’s mission is for Christian artists to give glory and praise to God through the talents He has given them, and to share their art with the world. The goal of the show is to create beautiful sacred art that inspires and enhances devotion to God the Father.

The show will honor co-founder Laura Duggan who died in 2017. She and Sue Kouma Johnson said their dream behind the event was to share Catholic art with the world.

“Sacred art is imagery intended to uplift the mind to the spiritual,” they said in founding the event, “and this is the intent of the Sacred Art Show and Sale.”

The first Sacred Art Show and sale, “Catholic Art by Catholic Artists” was held in Lincoln in 2009.

This year, Gail Johnson Giron and Sue Kouma Johnson are bringing the show back after popular demand and the desire to continue Laura’s vision.

“It is important to have this in our society... to evangelize our Catholic faith to others through our art,” said Johnson Giron.

For the first time, this year, artists of other Christian denominations will be invited to participate, in an effort to foster ecumenism, the striving to reunite all Christians.

“We are hoping to share the beauty of our Catholic faith with other Christians, while also enjoying the beauty which the Holy Spirit is bestowing through their artwork,” said Kouma Johnson, artist and co-founder of the Sacred Art Show.

Ten percent of all sales will be donated to Catholic Social Services’ St. Gianna Women’s Home, for women escaping domestic violence and abortion.

“I feel we are part of a bigger movement of the Holy Spirit,” said Kouma Johnson. “Both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI have reached out to artists and asked for new art that will lift the spirit by portraying and communicating the beauty, truth and goodness of God.”

The show opens Saturday, May 5, at 9 a.m. There will be a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Sunday’s show will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with coffee and cookies served. A free-will offering will be taken.

The organizers intend for the show to become an event artists and patrons look forward to each year.
