LINCOLN (SNR) – All are invited to a Solemn Pontifical High Requiem Mass Tuesday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 320 N 16th St., Lincoln.
The event is sponsored by the Venerable Sheen Society, an informal group on UNL’s campus that provides community in attending the extraordinary form Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Oratory, 1145 South St., Lincoln. The group sponsored a Rorate Mass in December – a candlelight Advent Mass – and the response was so successful the group planned this second-semester event.
The Mass will be celebrated in the extraordinary form by Bishop Robert Finn. The assistant priest will be Father Josef Bisig, F.S.S.P., the founder and first superior general of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter.
The choir at the Newman Center has teamed up with the schola at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary for the music, and eight men from UNL have been meeting for altar-server training multiple times, as this is a complicated liturgy to serve.
The Mass will be offered for all of the deceased friends, family, and benefactors of the UNL Catholic community. In the Requiem Mass, a catafalque, or frame used to hold a coffin, may stand in place of the deceased to represent those for whom the Mass is offered. For the April 17 Mass, a catafalque was home-built by two UNL students, specifically designed to match the interior of the church.
