WAVERLY (SNR) – Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House will host its first Spanish retreat Oct. 25-27.
Father Christopher Stoley will lead “Conversation with Christ: Fundamentals of Prayer and Meditation” at the retreat house near Waverly.
The 2016 Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of Lincoln outlined blessings and challenges for Hispanic Catholics. One of the challenges and five action points was the lack of retreats in Spanish.
The Oct. 25-27 retreat will cover fundamentals of meditation and principles to have a more effective prayer life based on St. Teresa of Avila.
“In my priestly ministry,” Father Stoley said, “the main questions I get are related to prayer: Why doesn’t God answer? And am I doing this right?
“The reason we struggle with these questions is because we don’t have quiet,” he continued. “God is found in the silence, not the chaos. A retreat takes one away from the noise. We follow Jesus into the wilderness to encounter God, who does answer. We just have to listen.”
Father Stoley recommended the book “Conversation with Christ” by Peter Rohrbach, which makes St. Teresa’s teaching on prayer understandable.
The retreat, aimed toward Spanish-speaking adults and couples, to grow in prayer themselves and to pass it on to their children, will be mostly a silent retreat, but with some discussion and recreation.

Father Christopher Stoley was ordained in 2015 and is pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Harvard. He helps with Hispanic ministry in the Hastings area, and teaches at St. Cecilia High School in Hastings.

Casa Buen Consejo ofrecerá el primer retiro en español
WAVERLY (SNR) – Casa de Retiros de Nuestra Señora de Buen Consejo ofrecerá su primer retiro en español el 25-27 de octubre.
El padre Christopher Stoley dará el tema de “Conversación con Cristo: Fundamentos de Oración y Meditación” en la casa de retiros cerca de Waverly.
El Plan Pastoral para el Ministerio Hispano en la Diócesis de Lincoln (2016) nota las bendiciones y dificultades para católicos hispanos. Una de las dificultades y de los cinco puntos de acción fue la falta de retiros en español.
El retiro de 25-27 de Octubre va a cubrir los fundamentos de meditación para tener una vida de oración más efectiva según las enseñanzas de Santa Teresa de Avila.
“En mi ministerio,” dijo el Padre Stoley, “las preguntas más comunes sobre la oración son:¿Por qué no me contesta Dios? -y- ¿Estoy orando correctamente?
“Luchamos con esas preguntas porque no tenemos el silencio,” él continuó. “Encontramos a Dios en el silencio, no en el caos. Un retiro lleva una persona fuera de los ruidos, seguimos a Jesús al desierto donde encontramos a Dios, que nos contesta. Solo tenemos que escuchar.”
El Padre Stoley recomienda el libro “Conversación con Cristo” escrito por Peter Rohrbach, que explica la enseñanza de Santa Teresa sobre la oración.
El retiro es para los adultos que hablan español, para crecer en su vida de oración para que la comparten con sus hijos. El retiro será silent la mayoría del tiempo pero con oportunidades de recreación y discusión.
El Padre Christopher Stoley fue ordenado en 2015 y es párroco de la iglesia San José en Harvard. Él ayuda con el ministerio hispano en el aria de Hastings y es maestro en la escuela Santa Cecilia en Hastings.
