DECREE
Establishing Three new Deaneries out of the Lincoln Deanery
Canon 374 §2 C.I.C. establishes that several neighboring parishes can be joined together in special groups to foster pastoral care known as vicariates forane or deaneries. Currently in the Diocese of Lincoln, the parishes in the city of Lincoln are grouped together as one deanery. Over the years, the Lincoln Deanery has grown in the number of parishes and people living within its territory. After consulting with the Presbyteral Council on August 22, 2019, and after consulting with the Lincoln pastors on September 13, 2019, I have determined that pastoral care will be better provided for the city of Lincoln and its parishes by dividing the Lincoln Deanery into three distinct deaneries. Therefore, I, James Douglas Conley, by the Grace of God and the Apostolic See, Bishop of Lincoln, by the ordinary power granted to me as diocesan Bishop, effective November 11, 2019, hereby decree the following:
The current Lincoln Deanery shall be divided into three distinct deaneries (vicariates forane) and a new Dean (Vicar forane) shall be appointed for each deanery according to the following division:
Lincoln West Deanery shall include the territory of the parishes of North American Martyrs Parish, St. Mary Parish, and Blessed Sacrament Parish.
Lincoln Central Deanery shall include the territory of the parishes of Sacred Heart Parish, St. Teresa Parish, Cathedral of the Risen Christ, and St. Peter’s Parish.
Lincoln East Deanery shall include the territory of the parishes of St. Patrick Parish, St. John the Apostle Parish, St. Joseph Parish, and St. Michael Parish.
All things to the contrary notwithstanding.
Given at the Chancery in Lincoln, Nebraska, November 7, 2019.
The Most Reverend James D. Conley, D.D., S.T.L.
Bishop of Lincoln
Reverend Daniel J. Rayer, J.C.L.
