WAVERLY (SNR) - Father Joseph Faulkner will present a scriptural based weekend retreat March 6-8, “Biblical Prayer and its Benefits,” at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House near Waverly.
Father Faulkner emphasized that the retreat for men and women is not just for the advanced, or scholarly.
“This retreat is meant for people at all levels in their spiritual life,” he said. “We can all pray by using scripture. Even beginners and those who feel they do not know the scriptures very well can learn the skills to help them develop.”
Father Faulkner said he had a powerful experience at an Ignatian retreat last summer.
“It was a reminder for me, both of the importance of going on a retreat, and how scripture influences our prayer and can form a strong foundation for it,” he said. “All Christians —not just priests and nuns—need to develop our spiritual life, and a knowledge and intimacy with scripture will help us do that.”
Retreatants should bring their Bibles. Some sources which Father Faulkner recommended, moving from beginner to more advanced are, “To Know Christ Jesus” by Frank Sheed, the “Jesus of Nazareth” trilogy by Pope Benedict, and “The Challenge of Jesus” by N. T. Wright.
Father Faulkner is pastor of St. Wenceslaus Parish in Wahoo. Previously, he was pastor at St. Ann Parish in Doniphan and Sacred Heart in Kenesaw while teaching at St. Cecilia High School in Hastings.
Father Faulkner said he enjoys teaching, has worked in Catholic schools since he was ordained in 2005, and has been involved with the summer catechetical program Totus Tuus since it started in 2002. His homilies and blog posts can be found at fathertalkstoofast.blogspot.com.
