LINCOLN (SNR) - The Calix Society of Lincoln will present a novena to Venerable Matt Talbot Oct. 13-21.

The novena’s theme addresses the pandemic-like spread of old and new forms of addiction sweeping the state and country. Each night over Zoom, a different leader will lead the 30-minute prayer service that will include prayers to Matt Talbot as well as personal testimony of the leader. Participants may attend every night or any night they are available.

The Irish-born Matt Talbot was an alcoholic who, through dedication to prayer and the sacraments, was able to recover from his addiction. He died in 1925 and has been declared ‘venerable’ by the Church.

Calix International was founded in the 1940s. Alcoholics met after Saturday morning Mass to discuss the readings for the upcoming Sunday and how their faith melded with the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The name “Calix” (Latin for chalice) and the motto “Going from the cup that inebriates to the Cup that sanctifies” were adopted. The first meeting of the Lincoln Chapter of Calix International was held in 1980, and chapters have been established in McCook and Hastings, as well.
