WAVERLY (SNR) - Men and women of all ages are invited to Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly Oct. 23-25, for a weekend retreat, “St. John of the Cross and the Ascent of Mount Carmel: An Examination of the Dark Night of the Soul.”

St. John of the Cross can be daunting to read, so many avoid his writings. Father Karl Millis is offering an introduction to St. John of the Cross, to help us understand some of his fundamental teachings.

“This retreat will assume the attendee knows little or nothing about St. John of the Cross, and so will start from his basic teachings, and build upon those step by step,” Father Millis said, “thus making him understandable and approachable, without being overwhelmed.”

He said St. John of the Cross is “one of those authors that one can read again and again, and continue to gain new insights and understandings about the spiritual life.”

The retreat will examine the life of St. John of the Cross and his work with St. Teresa of Avila in reforming the Carmelite Order; the sufferings he experienced and how he understood these in connection to the Cross of Christ.

The retreat will examine sections of St. John’s book, “The Ascent to Mount Carmel.” The best translation is found in The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross, translated by Kieran Kavanaugh, O.C.D., and Otilio Rodriguez, O.C.D.

Father Millis was ordained in 1999 and came to the Diocese of Lincoln six years ago, serving at St. Joseph in Auburn, St. Clara in Peru, and as chaplain of the Newman Center in Peru. He has been a Third Order Carmelite for more than 30 years, and has studied Carmelite spirituality extensively in both Rome and the United States.
