HASTINGS (SCRTL/SNR) – More than 300 Christians lined the sidewalks of Burlington Avenue and 2nd Street in Hastings Oct. 4, forming a “Life Chain” in the shape of a cross.

The Life Chain event, held from 2 to 3 p.m., was a stand of peaceful and prayerful solidarity by the Hastings community to communicate that “Abortion is wrong, and the Church is opposed to the killing of pre-born children.”

Christian led and church focused, Life Chain is interfaith and welcomes everyone who upholds human life, from conception to natural death. The event is held each year on the first Sunday of October in communities across the nation, and has been held consistently in Hastings since 1992.

Mary Souchek, the local event coordinator, said the number of people participating this year increased by more than 50.

“We are very grateful to the Hastings and surrounding communities for taking time out of their day to show up, stand for an hour, and pray for the unborn,” she said.

“America’s holocaust of innocent children will end only when Christians resolve to end it. We had a wonderful turnout this year and hope to have even more attend next year,” she added.

Signs held by the silent witnesses proclaimed, “Abortion Kills Children,” “Adoption – the Loving Option,” “Jesus Forgives and Heals,” “Abortion Hurts Women,”

“Life – the first Inalienable Right,” “Pray to End Abortion,” and “El Aborto Mata Ninos.” Many families came this year, bringing their children to hold signs, to pray and to witness to the sanctity of life, even at its tiniest stage – in the womb.
