(SNR) – Betty Jean Conley, the mother of Bishop James Conley, died Dec. 19 in Overland Park, Kan. She was 92.

Bishop Conley celebrated a funeral Mass Dec. 22 at Holy Spirit Church in Overland Park with priests from the Diocese of Lincoln concelebrating. Several bishops and priests from other dioceses also concelebrated. Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City, a childhood friend and schoolmate of Bishop Conley, preached the homily.

Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, Kan. Porter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jean and her husband Carl were baptized and received into the Church by Bishop Conley in 1991. Carl preceded her in death in 2006.

Mrs. Conley is survived by her son Bishop Conley, a daughter Susan Kathleen Atkins, two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

 Bishop Conley will celebrate a “Month’s Mind Mass” Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Risen Christ, 3500 Sheridan Blvd., Lincoln.

A “Month’s Mind Mass” is a requiem Mass offered for the repose of the soul of a deceased person about a month after his or her death. Those who were unable to attend her funeral may join in praying with His Excellency for his mother’s happy repose.
