(SNR) – The Emmaus Institute will offer a free course, “The Mother of the Word: A Biblical Study of Mary,” June 21-25.
The study will focus on the roots of the faith and understanding about the mother of the Lord: What does God actually say about the Blessed Mother, and how does Jesus want us to encounter her through His Word?
The specific aims for this study will be to examine various Old Testament passages to discover how they shed light on the person and role of Mary; and to observe the many ways the New Testament draws from and builds on the Old in its presentation of Jesus’ mother.
“In the very pages of Scripture,” said Emmaus president Dr. Vern Steiner, “we will discover how Mary is revealed as the new Eve (session 1), the new Ark of the Covenant (session 2), the Queen of Jesus’ eternal kingdom (session 3), the mother of the Word (session 4), and the mother of all Christians (session 5).
He said the one-week course is part of a “project in the making” in which each session will be recorded and used to make quality videos for study and formation in Sacred Scripture. Participants will sit in on the recording of the class, and will be invited to engage with questions and reflections.
The class will be taught by Emmaus Institute teacher, Joshua Burks. Detailed notes will be provided, along with the option to purchase an accompanying Study Guide suitable for Bible studies and small groups. The class will take place June 21-25, Monday through Friday, 9 to 11 a.m. at The Emmaus Institute, 3901 Normal Blvd., Suite 101, Lincoln.

The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies exists to promote a biblically literate community of God’s people, enkindled with the knowledge and love of Christ, through a deepening understanding of Scripture and its centrality in the life and liturgy of the Church. The intention of the biblical study of Mary is that it will bear fruit both in the Church’s understanding of the Blessed Mother and in each participant’s confidence in encountering the Lord in Scripture. Class attendees are encouraged to spread the word and to stay tuned for the release of the videos and the accompanying Study Guide, and to begin making plans for their own Bible study or parish group event on this topic.
