A biblical retreat on discipleship with Emmaus Institute

WAVERLY (SNR) – The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies will host a 24-hour scriptural retreat, “Following the Way: A Biblical Retreat on Discipleship” Aug. 19-20 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly.

The aim of the retreat is to look at the theme of discipleship from several angles: Who exactly is the Lord of the disciple, and what are the implications of getting this right? What exactly does it mean to be a disciple? And what is the path of actually becoming faithful disciples?

Dr. Vern Steiner, Chad Steiner and Joshua Burks will each offer conferences that draw on key passages in the Gospels which shed light on our Lord and on our calling as Jesus’ disciples.  A final conference will engage retreatants in a guided discussion from understanding to application.

Vern Steiner, president of the Emmaus Institute, said their goal “is not merely to learn about discipleship, but actually to become the disciples Jesus has called us to be.”

“Just as we cannot love what or whom)we do not know, so we cannot truly be disciples of One whose identity is blurry or if we do not even grasp what being His disciple entails,” he continued. “The quiet retreat setting provides a perfect time and place for aspiring disciples to ponder prayerfully and personally the implications of that statement.”

The Emmaus Institute enkindles knowledge and love of Christ through a deepening understanding of Scripture and its centrality in the life and liturgy of the Church. Their varied courses are listed on their website, emmausinstitute.net.

The 24-hour retreat Aug. 19-20 will include opportunities for Mass, prayer, confessions, silence, discussion, and more. The retreat starts Friday with rosary and Mass at 7 p.m., and ends Saturday with 6 p.m. supper.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House offers a peaceful atmosphere of prayer and recollection, situated on a spacious acreage near Waverly. The facility includes 50 single rooms, each with a private bath. Other upcoming retreats include 4-day and 8-day Directed Ignatian Retreats starting Aug. 4, 8, 12 and 29 and Sept. 2; and an Unbound retreat, “Freedom in Christ” with Father Gary Coulter Aug. 26-28.
