This September, the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters will mark the 50th anniversary of their presence in Lincoln.

As the anniversary nears, the Sisters and those who support their work are renewing efforts to share information about their prayerful presence in the diocese.

The Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters are often called the “Pink Sisters,” due to their rose-colored habits, which symbolize the joy found in their vocation. The Pink Sisters are a cloistered order, dedicated to perpetual adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. They were founded in Holland in 1896 and have convents in Philadelphia, St. Louis and Texas, as well as Germany and Poland, West Africa, India, Philippines, Argentina and Indonesia.

Bishop Glennon Flavin invited the Sisters to the Lincoln Diocese in 1973. The Adoration Chapel of Christ the King, at 1040 S. Cotner Blvd. in Lincoln, is open to the public from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Each winter, a membership drive is launched to encourage support for the Sisters, by means of the “Pink Sisters Auxiliary.”

Pink Sisters Auxiliary membership is open to everyone. Memberships involve a suggested fee of $10 per individual and $20 per family. The funds help to support the Sisters and the needs of managing their home, grounds and chapel.

Each member is included in the daily prayers of the Sisters, special remembrance in daily Mass, four solemn novenas each year, and a promise of God’s blessings upon the member and his or her family.

A donation is not necessary to receive the benefits from the prayers and sacrifices of the Pink Sisters, of course, as they pray for all members of the Diocese of Lincoln; however, those who do donate are included in extra prayers and Masses in gratitude for caring for their needs.

Memberships can be made payable to “Pink Sisters Auxiliary” and can be mailed to: Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters, 1040 S. Cotner Blvd., Lincoln, NE, 68510. Any additional funds are appreciated.

There also is a need for lay adorers to join in the perpetual adoration hours at the chapel.

“It has been a year of transfers and changes for the Pink Sisters,” explained Joan Tasler, publicity chair for the Pink Sisters Auxiliary board, “and there are currently only six Sisters living at the convent.”

While the Sisters fill many of the adoration hours, she explained, they do need help filling hours when they are needed for other tasks in the convent.

“The 2 p.m. daily hour is of particular need right now as it used to be filled by one of the Sisters who was transferred to another convent in December due to health needs,” Tasler said. Other hours are also available, and there is also a need for more substitute adorers.

Those who can help as an adorer may call Tabby Goodwater, lay adorer scheduler, at 402-499-6028.

“Besides the benefit of being with our Lord for an hour, the Sisters remember these lay adorers in special prayers and Masses throughout the year as well,” Tasler said.
