As the Lenten season approaches, Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House invites the faithful to deepen their spiritual journey through two opportunities: an Ash Wednesday day of reflection and a Lenten retreat.
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday March 5, and Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House will host a (Desert) Day of Reflection, encouraging attendees to enter the season with a heart centered on God. The day begins with check-in and personal prayer before a 9:45 a.m. chapel gathering and 10 a.m. talk, followed by time for adoration, confessions, and the rosary.
Father Thomas Broulliette, vicar general of the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln, will present, focusing on hope in honor of the Jubilee Year.
The event concludes with a 2 p.m. Mass with the distribution of ashes, and participants may depart any time after 3 p.m.
As Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence, attendees are encouraged to bring a meatless sack lunch ($10) or request a prepared lunch ($20). No pre-registration is required, allowing for flexible participation.
Later in the season, Father Christopher Kubat will lead a Lenten retreat titled “Maturing in Prayer.” The weekend retreat, held March 14-16, will explore the power of silent prayer as a means of encountering the love of Jesus and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide one’s life.
“I frequently pray for the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit,” Father Kubat said, “especially when I do not know what to say. And I pray with confidence because the Lord will answer this prayer; we can rely on the aid of the Holy Spirit Who will give us the words to speak.”
The retreat begins Friday, March 14, at 8 p.m. with a rosary and Mass. It concludes Sunday with a noon lunch. For those unable to attend in person, a virtual option is available for participation online.
Father Kubat is pastor of St. Andrew Parish in Tecumseh and St. Mary in St. Mary. He previously served as the director of Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska. His passion for retreats is evident in his encouragement to others: “Once someone has experienced the power of a retreat and is enkindled with the fire of love, they will make it their mission to encourage their family and friends to attend.”
