The Lincoln Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (LDCCW)’s 16th annual October Pro-Life Diaper Drive is underway, and donations are still being sought.
The LDCCW is an organization of all Catholic women in the Diocese of Lincoln which aims to enrich the lives of Catholic women by pursuing projects designed to further spiritual and family life.
Organized in 1932, the LDCCW has undertaken dozens of projects which fulfill the corporal and spiritual works of mercy as outlined by the Church.
Each October, in honor of “Respect Life Month,” the LDCCW collects donations of diapers, or monetary donations, for diocesan pregnancy centers and Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska. Many pregnancy centers distribute about 3,000 diapers per month for their clients; the four largest in the diocese distribute up to 12,000 per month.
The goal of the LDCCW drive is to collect 100,000 diapers for the organizations. This program is just one way Catholics can participate in “Walking with Moms in Need,” an initiative launched by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to help parishes better support and accompany pregnant and parenting women. The bishops introduced “Walking with Moms in Need” with the belief that “everyone should know how to help moms in difficult circumstances.”
The LDCCW asks for the assistance of all Catholics in the Diocese of Lincoln for the diaper drive. Donations of diapers may be left in the narthex of any diocesan church. They will be picked up by LDCCW organizers and delivered to organizations that help families in need.
Diapers in size 6 are the size most commonly needed. While newborns use, on average, 1,800 diapers per year, they grow at a fast pace and switch sizes fairly rapidly. Children wear the larger size diapers for a longer period of time.
Those who prefer to make a monetary donation instead of purchasing diapers themselves may do so. Checks may be payable to “LDCCW.” They may be mailed to LDCCW, 3600 W Wittstruck Road, Martell, NE 68404. The money donated will be used to purchase needed diaper sizes when the supply is short.
“This project has been successful because of the participation of all parishes in the Lincoln Diocese,” said Heather Lipovsky, LDCCW social media manager.
Kay Wessel, diaper drive coordinator, agreed.
“Please consider making a donation today,” she said. “The babies thank you.”
