Here are some true words of wisdom from one of our most dedicated volunteers at CSS, Phil Wolfe. He and his family are members of St. John the Apostle Parish in Lincoln.

Phil comes to CSS weekly to help our refugee and immigrant clients prepare for their U.S. Naturalization interview, and for the past 15 years, he has volunteered reading to kindergartners, most recently at St. Patrick School in Lincoln.

Without further adieu, to the class of 2022:

To the Class of 2022
(and just good advice for the rest of us)

Congratulations! You made it through another year of school. If I could give you one piece of advice it would be this:

Make the sign of the cross every day. It is a simple prayer, but very powerful.

The rest of the advice I have is just things that I have learned having been on this earth for 70+ years so here goes:

Eat your vegetables. Broccoli, green beans and tomatoes really are good for you.

Be kind to people... remember your good manners.

Clean your room some day without being told. It will make your mom smile.

Make a five-minute visit to the church.

Read, read, read. Books are your friends.

Make the sign of the cross every day.

It’s hard to be a mom or dad. Hug your parents.

Practice writing the alphabet.

It’s nice to be first, but nicer to let others go first.

Eat fruit. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Visit the library once a week.

Remember those magic words, “Please and Thank you.”

Make the sign of the cross every day.

Practice counting to 100.

Drink more milk than pop.

Turn off your TV. There are better things to do with your time.

Dance. It will make you and others smile.

Do a good deed every day. It makes God smile.

Don’t play in the street.

Make the sign of the cross every day.

Learn to swim, but never swim by yourself.

Wash your hands.

Be nice to your brothers and sisters.

Brush your teeth, morning and night. Those teeth have to last 80 years.

Wear your bike helmet. If you hit the sidewalk, your head isn’t as hard as you think.

And if you remember only one of these things I’ve said, remember this — and you can trust me on this one: Make the sign of the cross every day.
