Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS) in Auburn operates not only as a place where those in need can secure food for their families, or where an individual living on a fixed income can access emergency cash assistance when their only vehicle needs repair, nor is it only a place for local folks to shop at the St. Francis Gift & Thrift. It is, in fact, much more than this. Catholic Social Services in Auburn provides essential services that go beyond the surface, touching hearts and uplifting spirits.
Several weeks ago, our CSS team encountered a homeless gentleman in the area and not only were we able to provide him food and personal care items, but the staff took time to visit and get to know him. They called him by name, listened to his struggles, smiled and laughed at his jokes, and gave him encouragement as he left.
Later that same week, the CSS team provided much-needed furniture to a family, an act that brought tears to the eyes of the mother. She came for food and left with more because a donor with the exact items she needed stopped by to donate as she was leaving. Our staff was quick to notice the need and not let the opportune encounter be missed.
This gesture, seemingly small but profoundly significant, illustrates the impact that our team has on those we serve, and on the community as a whole. It wasn’t just the physical items we were able to give, but rather the compassion behind it. It’s the welcoming smiles, the attentiveness during the interaction, and the words of encouragement that touch hearts and uplift spirits.
Yet another new client, traveling from Falls City, came to our offices after work to receive services. After being helped by one of our team members, she took her hand, looked our team member in the eye and said, “CSS has provided me more than I ever expected.”
Giving people food, shelter, clothing and other necessities is important—it’s very important actually—but helping our clients move from a place of despair to a place of hope is huge, and it’s what we at Catholic Social Services are all about. We don’t just show up to work every day so that we can pass out lunches, nonperishables, and blankets, and whatnot; we come so that Catholic Social Services can be a source of hope, a beacon of light, and a lifeline for those facing adversity. Thank you all for your prayers and support. May God bless you!
