The sound of trumpets will once again fill St. Joseph Church in Lincoln Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m., as musicians and community members gather for Trumpet Fest 2026, an annual charity concert benefiting Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS).
Founded in 2004 by local trumpeter and musician Kevin Murray, Trumpet Fest began as a simple idea: gather talented musicians, make beautiful music, and support an organization doing vital work for families in need. More than two decades later, the event has raised more than $50,000 for CSS, quietly transforming lives through the universal language of music.
Leading up to this year’s event, Kevin Murray spoke with John Soukup, development officer at CSS, for our Hope in the Good Life podcast. During the podcast, Murray told first-time attendees to expect all kinds of music, “We’ve got pop, classical, sacred, opera, jazz, Broadway — you’re going to hear the whole gamut.”
And it’s so true! I’ve been attending Trumpet Fest for several years, and I am always surprised and inspired by the variety of music. What impresses me most, however, is the depth of talent and passion behind each performance.
In addition to seasoned musicians playing popular pieces, you will also hear some of their own compositions. There will be young musicians, too. Murray shared on the podcast that “You’re hearing 13-year-old trumpet players learning, and you’re hearing an old trumpet player — me — trying to make music.”
The quality and range of musicians at Trumpet Fest is obviously generational, with those young musicians learning to someday be those elders, playing their own pieces years from now. The mentorship provided to students by their teachers is visible throughout the performances as nationally acclaimed musicians share the stage with those just beginning their musical journey.
Other performances include those by Dr. Darryl White with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, The Darryl White Trio, Frank Stroup, Barb Schmit, and Harpist Julietta Rabens.
The afternoon promises a great, low-key yet fun and exciting atmosphere for adults and kids alike. Admission is free, but a hat is circulated for free-will donations that go directly into supporting CSS programs.
There is an intentional and important relationship between the Trumpet Fest event and CSS. Years ago, Murray was talking with a friend whose family was assisted by CSS and according to the friend, “If it weren’t for Catholic Social Services counseling, my son probably wouldn’t be alive today.” Murray has been inspired to use his passion for music to help others like his friend’s family ever since.
This is just one example of how CSS and those we serve are blessed by the efforts of others. Small acts of kindness and the generosity of our donors does so much to make a difference. With the recent cold weather we’ve had in Lincoln, we’ve been able to accommodate those living on the streets by offering coffee and high protein breakfast burritos. The Knights of Columbus in Lincoln, and countless volunteers at CSS Hastings, faithfully prepare sandwiches and sack lunches for those in need. Our thrift stores rely heavily on the skilled sorting, pricing, and merchandising of volunteers, followed closely by the team who helps with recycling and waste management.
Fundraising events throughout the year— like Trumpet Fest, Walk to End Hunger, and CaroleFest —were once just the idea of one person who believed strongly in the mission of CSS and found ways to bring their talents into the fold. A good reminder that everyone can do something.
In the podcast, Kevin Murray shared with John Soukup that he often reminds audiences, quoting his own trumpet teacher: “The goal of music is to elevate the heart.” Trumpet Fest does exactly that—lifting hearts through music, community, and compassion, while supporting essential services that bring hope to those who need it most.
Because of Kevin Murray, and others like him, CSS is able to do so much more for the poor and vulnerable who come through our doors each day. If you have an idea, don’t be shy. Come by and be part of the vision at CSS as we elevate those around us with charity, mercy, and hope!
