Finally, after many years of prayer, Gianna’s Java & Gelato is weeks away from opening in Lincoln.
Just minutes before typing these words, I received a call from a friend who is desperately trying to find a safe place to house a young, pregnant woman (with a toddler in tow) who has escaped a violent man. Fortunately, we have room at St. Gianna’s Women’s Home. Since the demand exceeds our available resources, sometimes we have to say no. This is the most difficult part of our job.
Now, because of Gianna’s Java & Gelato, there will be more income generated for Catholic Social Services, which will be used to help even more needy individuals and families. This is because all the proceeds will be used to help those who come to us in crisis.
Over the last several months, Dave Walbrecht, our chief executive chef, has perfected the art of making gelato and sorbetto. Gelato is lower in fat than regular ice cream and contains less air so the flavors are more intense. Sorbetto is water-based. Our machine and ingredients are all imported from Italy and our gelato and sorbetto will be hand-crafted, daily, on-site.
We also have our own blend of coffee (available for purchase), with a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. Included are delicious fresh-baked cinnamon rolls. We will also have all of the ‘foofy flavored’ coffees, thanks to Jake Mousel, our coffee expert.
Patrons may dine inside or use our drive-thru window. Gift cards are now available for any desired amount - a perfect Christmas gift!
If you do choose to dine in, we will have an intimate dining area with a fireplace - the best place for husbands or boyfriends to take their wives or girlfriends as they tell them they are the best thing God has given them on earth as their wives and girlfriends whisper ‘sweet nothings’ into their ears.
On Friday, Nov. 6, we had a special tasting event open to the public. Of the coffee, gelato and sorbetto served, not much was left over. Everyone enjoyed it.
