As most of you know, Catholic Social Services helps individuals and families across the 24,000 square miles that is the diocese of Lincoln in a number of ways, including housing for women who are escaping the pressures to abort their unborn babies; emergency services; disaster relief; our St. Christopher Car program; the provision of food, clothing, furniture, appliances and other household items; and charity grants for individuals who are unable to afford the total cost of counseling.

As most of you also know, we have four fixed sites across the diocese- Imperial, Hastings, Lincoln and Auburn. And since we do not accept any government funding for what is listed above, the support of the faithful of Southern Nebraska is essential.

I am happy to announce that on Sunday, June 25, we will be holding our annual St. Francis Summer’s Eve Celebration on the Spirit of Brownville riverboat in Brownville. This will be a dinner cruise like last year. Tickets are $30 per person. There are multiple levels of sponsorship available and we are hoping that for many who will not be able to attend, they will be able to support this endeavor in some means.

All of the proceeds will be used to support our mission in the southeastern sector of the diocese of Lincoln. It is amazing that since opening our St. Francis Center (which includes a beautiful thrift store, food pantry and offices) in 2000, we have provided nearly $1,700,000 in total assistance in southeast Nebraska in the ways outlined above. With your love, help and support, we will be able to continue our mission given to us by Jesus Christ as outlined in the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew’s gospel, verses thirty-one to forty-six, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”

And remember, whatever you send us, Jesus will add two zeros to your donation which will be your deposit in your 401K account in heaven where our Lord will reward us a hundred fold. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us, and for good weather for this event. I can almost hear the captain of the Spirit of Brownville say, ‘All Aboard!’
