Homework Outline

This class begins to look at the Fifth Commandment, starting with a foundation on the dignity of the human body and how all human life is to be preserved. General topics are first addressed followed by a more in-depth look at just war, the death penalty and abortion. Under general concepts, various sins against one’s own body are discussed, including suicide, gluttony, eating disorders, drugs and alcohol. Next, sins against the life and dignity of others is reviewed, including murder, prejudice, racism, revenge. More detail is then explored on the topic of just war, including the criteria for a just war, and perspectives on the death penalty. For the latter, quotes are presented from recent popes. Finally, the topic of abortion is addressed, including the dignity of the innocent unborn, the barbarism of abortion procedures, the role of financial gain in the abortion industry and the weak arguments/justifications for supporting abortion. The lesson concludes with a beautiful look at a family who chose to bring their severely disfigured son to birth and a unique perspective on “quality of life.” A homework outline is provided for student notes.
