Homework Outline

This class continues to examine the Fifth Commandment by looking more closely at the topics of stem cell research and cloning, followed by euthanasia and the value of human suffering, concluding with other end-of-life issues. First, stem cells are defined and the therapeutic value of adult stem cells is examined. Next, embryonic stem cells are discussed with the negative moral implications of destroying innocent human life to obtain them and the reality that embryonic stem cells have not been found to be therapeutic, but rather problematic. This is followed by identifying the process of cloning and reviewing its immoral nature. The topic of euthanasia is next explored, recognizing that humans need to approach terminal illness with a sense of deep respect for the human person and a deeper understanding of the value of suffering. Other end-of-life issues are then discussed, including an exploration of ordinary vs. extraordinary care and the Catholic principles to be followed with these issues. A homework outline is provided for student notes.
