Historical Highlights

  • 1924 – An old Baptist Church (erected in 1893) at 17th & Silver Streets was acquired for St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ashland.
  • Ascension Thursday 1924 – Fr. Philip Matuska OFM, our first pastor, celebrated the first mass in the church, which was dedicated October 29, 1924.
  • May 1, 1950 – Construction of a Rectory begins and is dedicated January 31, 1951 by Fr. Daniel Kealy, our first pastor “in residence”.
  • March 18, 1956 – Groundbreaking for a new church to be built at 17th & Adams Streets under the supervision of Fr. Clarence Stirn.
  • Sunday December 23, 1956 – first Mass celebrated in the church, which was dedicated February 27, 1957, the old church building is razed in March.
  • October 29, 1974 – St. Mary's Catholic Church celebrated its 50th Centennial.
  • October 19, 1980 – Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is dedicated.
  • November 1, 1981 – St. Mary Education Center is constructed and dedicated under the guidance of Fr. Zygmund Rydz.
  • 1999 – An elevator is installed, the basement and kitchen are remodeled.
  • 2004 – Interior of St. Mary Church is renovated.

Sacred Heart, Cedar Hill

Historical Highlights

  • By 1879 Sacred Heart, Cedar Hill parish was officially formed though priests had been serving the area before this.
  • In March, 1880 over 30 wagon loads of lumber were hauled from Fremont, Nebraska. A 40'x60' structure was built over a cornfield; the cornstalks can still be seen in the crawl space under the church.
  • Almost 15 acres were deeded to the church by Mrs. Harriet Noteware; a cemetery, hall and church farm grounds surround the church building.
  • In 1924 the front of the church was extended by adding a bell tower and entrance; to the east a sanctuary and sacristy were added. The original church still stands.
  • On July 1, 1945, Sacred Heart was separated from St. John's of Prague and became the mother parish to the new St. George parish in Morse Bluff. After St. George's was completed in 1955, Sacred Heart again became a mission church to St. George.

St. Mary, Cedar Bluffs

Historical Highlights

  • The Cedar Bluffs Parish has had three names since its establishment:  Saint Patrick (1873-1884), Saint Augustine in Malice Settlement (1884-1918), and Saint Mary (1918-Present).
  • In 1917, the cornerstone was blessed for the present church, which was dedicated in 1918.
  • The parish was a mission to Fremont, Mead and Colon until the first resident pastor arrived in 1918.  In 1985, the parish was named a mission of Colon.
  • From 1985 to 1998, many improvements were made to the church and grounds.  The rectory was sold.  The entrance to the church was made handicap accessible; new front steps were added; and glass doors and etched glass panels were installed.  The chimney was removed and a new heating and air conditioning system was donated.  A new keyboard was also purchased.

St. Joseph, Colon

Historical Highlights

  • In 1880 the church was called Holy Rosary Parish which was located at the present Holy Rosary Cemetery, Father Fitzgerald was the priest.
  • In 1918 the church was built in Colon and was named St. Joseph after the pastor at the time, Father Joe Stockinger.
  • The dedication of the cornerstone was held on November 19, 1919, with Bishop Charles J. O'Reilly presiding.
  • On September 8, 1958 ground was broken for a new parish hall. Most of the work was done by the men of the parish under the supervision of Father Robert Trausch.
  • In 2018 we will be having our 100 year Centennial Celebration.

St. Joseph, Greenwood

Historical Highlights

  • March 1865 - Fr. Emmanuel Hartig, OSB celebrates the first Catholic Mass in the Greenwood area.
  • 1881 - The lot is obtained where the church now stands, plans are made, and money is raised.
  • 1884 - St. Joseph Catholic Church is built.
  • The first Altar Society was organized in 1921.
  • May 3, 1950 – The Church is rededicated after a three year renovation done by parishioners.
  • September 30, 1990 – Dedication of the addition of a parish hall with kitchen and bathrooms build by Fr. Francis Murphy.
  • February 8, 2001 – Dedication of the new altar and interior renovation in the year 2000.
  • June 14, 2009 – celebration of the 125th Anniversary of St. Joseph Church with a Corpus Christi Procession and Dinner.

St. James, Mead

PCCW Activities

  • Serves the luncheon after funeral Masses.
  • Hosts a rolls and coffee breakfast after Mass once a month.
  • Collects diapers for Diaper Drive, and eye glasses.
  • Care for Altar linens and pay for altar candles and other needed items for the church.
  • Hosts the Annual St. James Soup Supper/Luncheon
  • Prepares and serves the annual Neumann Faculty Christmas Party and the Neumann Fine Arts Banquet.
  • Collects needed items for Advent Baby Shower and toys/clothing for Catholic Social Services.
  • Hosts parish Potluck luncheons/dinners. 

St. George, Morse Bluff

Historical Highlights

  • Fr. George Llvanec became the first pastor of the new parish on March 16, 1945.
  • Mass was held in a temporary location until the church was built Sept. 25, 1955.
  • CCD classrooms were added to the hall in 1983. Later some classes were combined with North Bend when numbers declined.
  • In 1995 St. George celebrated 50 years.

Historical Highlights

  • On August 8, 1903 the church of St. Vitus was completed, and officially dedicated with the 1st Mass by Fr. Rippenberger on October 7, 1903.
  • For 10 years the church was a mission church to other parishes—Wahoo, Crete, Plasi, & Plattsmouth.  In 1913 they got approval from the Bishop to build a parish rectory.
  • In 1946 the church was extensively remodeled.
  • In 1965 St. Vitus was made a mission church of St. John Nepomucene in Weston.
  • By the mid-seventies the furnishings of the parish rectory were auctioned off and the structure itself was sold and moved.
  • Beginning in July, 1976, the church had exterior and interior repairs.
  • In June, 2003 St. Vitus celebrated their Centennial with a Mass, catered meal, and polka music under a large tent.
  • In 2014 restrooms and an office were added to the church.

Historical Highlights

  • On December 8, 1885 the 1st Mass was celebrated by Fr. Choka in the new 24' x 30' wooden church with 18 families.
  • In 1889 the parish grew to 140 families.  The situation was eased somewhat by the establishment of St. Vitus parish in Touhy in 1903 (our Mission parish now); however, it became clear the parish in Weston had outgrown its church building.
  • On July 25, 1906 the dedication of the new 101' x 42' brick church was celebrated.
  • The St. John's Parochial Grade School doors were opened to 56 students in September, 1956.
  • The church underwent a major renovation inside and out beginning in 2009.  Our 1st Mass in the newly renovated church took place on our 125th Anniversary in June, 2010 with a meal/reception that followed.
