Founder Msgr. Dawson present for ribbon-cutting
WAVERLY (SNR) – Villa Marie Home and School for Exceptional Children in Waverly held a celebration Sept. 11 to mark the dedication of the school’s new playground.
Bishop James Conley blessed the new playground and founder Msgr. James Dawson cut the dedication ribbon. Msgr. Dawson, now retired, served as director of the school for 28 years.
“It is just amazing that this came forth due to the annual fundraising dance and the many supporters we have,” said Jenny Allamby, executive director of development and advancement for Villa Marie.
The school hosts a dance each winter to support the school, which opened in 1964. It serves children between the ages of 6 and 18 who are challenged with developmental delays, Down Syndrome, autism, and other neurodiversity complications. The students receive personalized educational attention, allowing each to excel individually.
Proceeds from the 2019 dance – the 55th annual event – went toward funding the school’s Safety, Security and Physical Fitness Initiative, including the new playground. The playground not only enhances the students’ enjoyment, but also their core strength and overall fitness.
Contributors to the playground project were recognized at the Sept. 11 event, and given certificates signed by the students and staff. Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa provided cookies for the celebration. The school’s 2019 Christmas card, designed by student Matt Merwick, was unveiled and packages of 10 cards were sold for $10, or five packs for $40.
This year’s dance will be Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Rococo Theatre at 13th and P streets in Lincoln. The group Malpractice will entertain and Villa Marie School is looking for business sponsors for the dance and raffle items.
