LINCOLN – Students and staff of Cathedral of the Risen Christ School in Lincoln celebrated the conclusion of the “Can Read Challenge” with the Lincoln Police Department Oct. 9.

Students and staff of Cathedral School and members of the Lincoln Police Department competed in the “Can Read Challenge,” a month-long reading challenge to see who could read the most pages. Both sides took their reading very seriously and over the course of September, participants read a total of 799,176 pages.

Cathedral came out on top in the challenge, reading 437,265 pages. The top reader overall was seventh-grader George Ivanov, who read 20,507 pages.

As a reward, the top reader from each grade and top staff members were treated to a prize. LPD officers picked up the top readers in police cruisers and took them to the police department for a tour. The students got to sit in the assignment room, view investigative rooms, and walk through the dispatch room. Their visit concluded with pizza, ice cream and an award ceremony.

The Cathedral Eagles were also rewarded with an ice cream party at school, a show provided by Mad Cap Puppets, and a day out of uniform to dress up as their favorite literary characters.
