Oct. 19 event is a fundraiser for Pius X 2020 mission trip to Rwanda with international artist

LINCOLN (SNR) – Pius X High School in Lincoln will host an outdoor concert Oct. 19, featuring internationally-known artist Tony Melendez.

The event is a fundraiser for a 2020 mission trip to Rwanda. Melendez and his brother José will join a group of Pius X students and faculty on a mission trip and pilgrimage to Kibeho, where Mary appeared numerous times from 1981 through 1989. The apparitions were approved in 2001, the first apparitions of Our Lady on the African continent to be approved by the Holy See.

Melendez is a master guitarist who was born without arms, but learned to play guitar using his feet. Born in Nicaragua and raised in the United States, he came to international prominence in 1987 when he played for Pope John Paul II during the pontiff’s visit to Los Angeles. He gave four additional performances for Saint John Paul II, twice at the Vatican, once in Poland, and in Denver for World Youth Day in 1993. He has recorded many albums and founded Tony Melendez Ministries, a non-profit organization “dedicated to bringing compassion and hope through music and personal triumph.” He gives concerts, conferences, retreats and school presentations to help bring people’s hearts toward Jesus Christ.

Melendez will also speak at Pius X High School about bullying Oct. 18.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at 11401 Van Dorn St., Lincoln. In the event of inclement weather, it will be held at Pius X. Tickets are available online at https://boltstore.net/concert/. The cost is $15 for adults, $10 for students, or a maximum of $45 per family. Concert guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs.

Concert proceeds will go to support the Rwandan mission trip. The trip is sponsored by the Abana Foundation, a non-profit organization that strives to empower young people to feed, teach and give hope to people in Rwanda.
