LINCOLN (SNR/EI) – With the fall term coming to a close, The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies is now taking registrations for its winter 2019-2020 courses.
Based on a 10-week quarter system, the winter term will feature four new courses, beginning the first week in December and concluding the third week in February, with a two-week recess over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Each two-hour class will meet one evening weekly (6:30-8:30 p.m.).
Lincoln-area clergy, religious, and laity are encouraged to consider one or more of the following study opportunities in the coming term: “Two Testaments, One Body: Finding the New Testament Church in the Old Testament” is a probing look at how both Testaments inform our understanding of the Church Jesus founded (Mondays; C. Steiner); “Creation to New Creation: The Story of the Covenant from the Patriarchs to the Precepts of God’s Law (Genesis 12–Exodus 40)–Part 2” is the group’s journey through Scripture from Genesis to Revelation (Tuesdays; V. Steiner); “The Mother of the Word: A Biblical Study of Mary,” a fresh look at how the Old and New Testaments reveal the person and place of our blessed mother (Wednesdays; J. Burks); and “When God Tells Stories: The Book of Ruth as Model Short Story,” a study in the Bible’s dominant literary genre, with special attention to the exquisite story of Ruth (Thursdays; V. Steiner).
Additional details, including full course descriptions, cost, location, and a convenient online registration form, are available at www.emmausinstitute.net. Students are encouraged to register early in order to reserve a spot in the class.
The Emmaus Institute is in its first year of operation, with 90 students enrolled in its fall courses. Dedicated to the study, learning, and living of Sacred Scripture, the Institute serves the people of the Diocese of Lincoln by providing a variety of Scripture-centered courses, seminars, retreats, and other resources at various levels, in the interest of inspiring all Christians to a greater love for Christ through a deepening understanding of God’s Word.
Like Jesus in the Emmaus Road story of Luke 24, the Institute sees its mission as coming alongside God’s people, said Dr. Vern Steiner, president of the Emmaus Institute, “explaining to them how the whole scriptural theo-drama, from Creation to New Creation, from Genesis to Revelation, points the way to knowing and walking with Jesus.”
“And like the two disciples with whom Jesus conversed that first Easter, the Institute’s goal is that all of our hearts, ignited by the Word, ‘will burn within us,’” he said, “and that our eyes will be more opened to see him ‘in the breaking of the bread.’”
