LINCOLN (SNR) – Father Sean Kilcawley, director of the Family Life Office, presented an overview on “Love and Responsibility” Oct. 22 at the UNL Newman Center to a crowd of 170 people.
The talk was live-streamed to Hastings and David City, and can be accessed on the Family Life Office Facebook page and the diocesan Family Life website (www.lincolndiocese.org/family).
“This series is meant to give people best practices for their marriages,” said Marilyn Klein of the Family Life Office. “Too often we wait until people are in a crisis situation before we give them help. We want to create a culture in this diocese that emphasizes marriage maintenance and best practices and creates a norm of caring for your marriage in both spiritual and practical ways.”
The first talk was an overview of the philosophy and ideals that St. John Paul II wrote about in his book, “Love and Responsibility.” He wrote it as Bishop Karol Wojtyła, before he became Pope John Paul II. It was originally published in Polish in 1960 and in English in 1981. A new, updated and original translation was published in 2013.
The next three talks in the Family Life series will further open the lived reality of these teachings with practical advice and best practices. They are scheduled for Nov. 19, Jan. 14 and Feb. 11, and will feature experts in the fields of emotional, spiritual, and physical intimacy. They are geared toward married and engaged couples, although open to everyone.
The next talk, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., will feature Drs. Jonathan and Alexandra Marcotte, both Catholic marriage and family therapists discussing ways of improving emotional intimacy. In January Deacon James Keating will speak about spiritual intimacy and praying with one’s spouse. Dr. Todd Bowman, a psychologist and expert in healthy sexuality, will speak in February about physical intimacy. Future talks are slated to be streamed to Hastings, McCook, David City and Tecumseh.
All of the talks are free and open to the public. Parking on the streets is free after 6 p.m., or for a fee in the 17th and R parking garage (enter on Q Street).
