LINCOLN – The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies is partnering with Catholic Social Services to offer an Advent presentation entitled “Biblical Meditations for a Blessed Advent: The Nativity Hymns in Luke’s Gospel.”

It will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Gianna’s Java and Gelato, 2241 O St., Lincoln.

The Emmaus teaching staff will provide reflections on “Mary’s Song,” “Zechariah’s Song,” the “Angels’ Song,” and “Simeon’s Song” in the Gospel of Luke, to help listeners focus on the preparatory and penitential significance of Advent. There is no cost to attend, and registration is not required. Free-will donations will be accepted to benefit the work of  Catholic Social Services.

The Emmaus Institute, located in the Normal Plaza at 3901 Normal Blvd., Suite 101 in Lincoln, provides instruction and resources in Biblical Studies. Its mission is to inspire all Christians to a greater love for Christ through a deepening understanding of God’s Word.

“We want to offer people a biblical anchor for this important liturgical season in light of the busyness and consumerism which constantly encroach on the lead-up to Christmas,” said the Institute’s president, Dr. Vern Steiner. “Also, much of the planning that went into the formation of Emmaus occurred in a quiet room at Gianna’s, so we saw this as one way to thank CSS for providing a comfortable, Catholic environment where we could prayerfully discern the Lord’s will for this ministry.”

“We’re very grateful for the offer of their time and talents,” added Gianna’s manager, Jake Mousel, after Emmaus approached him with the possibility. “We want Gianna’s to be a welcoming place where ideas and apostolates like the Emmaus Institute can grow. That’s part of our ministry. I didn’t expect anything in return.”

Jake noted that many Church-related organizations have been struggling financially in recent years. “In light of that, this generosity from Emmaus is a witness to our faith, and to the spirit of the season in particular.”

People are invited to come early and have lunch at Gianna’s before the event. Those getting lunch prior to attending the presentation may use their receipt as a coupon for half-price cups or cones of gelato afterward. Coffee and light snacks will be provided during the presentation.
