LINCOLN (SNR) – Phi Kappa Theta, the Catholic fraternity at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, initiated a new class of 25 members this semester, its largest class to date.

The Nebraska Pi chapter of Phi Kappa Theta was originally founded in 1925 at UNL, but it closed during the Depression. The chapter was restarted for the 2005-2006 academic year and within two years, the group had enough brothers to become a fully active member of Phi Kappa Theta National. The fraternity house at 303 N. 17th St. in Lincoln opened in 2013.

After this semester’s initiation, Phi Kappa Theta held a banquet at St. Thomas Aquinas Church for the parents, new initiates, and new executive team that was installed at that time.

“We are excited about a lot of things,” said newly-installed Mitch Fisher. “With the largest initiation class we’ve ever had, we want to create an awesome collegiate experience around our five pillars: leadership, fraternal, social, intellectual, and spiritual. These plans include bringing in speakers like Paul J. Kim to foster a culture that builds up authentic Catholic masculinity. We already had a large brotherhood laser tag event and have a ton of fun socials and formals planned with sororities this semester.”

As the fraternity continues to grow, he said, they look to fulfill their idea of “being a beacon, not a bunker.”

“This house is not a refuge from society,” Fisher explained. “It is a foundation for going out and bringing light to campus.”
