LINCOLN (CSS/SNR) – “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change….”

The well-known Serenity Prayer is one many faithful refer to in times of confusion, doubt, and pain. The Serenity Prayer calls people to stop fighting oneself and others, to live life in the present moment, and to navigate times of uncertainty and suffering by placing trust in God’s plan, allowing Him to bring comfort and peace.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Counseling Center (IHMCC), 3700 Sheridan Blvd., Lincoln, aims to support people in living out the messages within the prayer and is dedicated to discovering new ways to do so. The IHMCC is a ministry of Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska.

The IHMCC has added a “Dialectical Behavioral Skills Group” to the services provided. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT, is an evidenced-based type of psychotherapy developed to help individuals with longstanding emotional and interpersonal problems. DBT is divided into four modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

With the help of group leaders, participants can find the exercises and techniques that work best for them. They will learn how to identify what is needed to take care of themselves and their relationships, to be able to live fully in the present moment by letting go of pain from the past or worry about the future, and cope more effectively with distressing situations as they arise. The small group environment provides a safe, confidential setting for participants to be able to understand themselves better on a daily basis.

A new DBT group at IHMCC will begin in early March. Those interested may contact the IHMCC for more information, or to schedule a no-cost informational meeting with a group leader to determine if a DBT Skills Group is right: call 402.489.1834, email This email address is being protected from spambots. The 'Serenity Prayer’ is the common name for a prayer written by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971). The best-known form is:

God, grant me the serenity to
Accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference. Wikipedia
