HASTINGS (SNR) – Kindergarten students at St. Michael School in Hastings marked the beginning of Lent Feb. 27 with a special version of the stations of the cross.
Under the direction of kindergarten teachers Mrs. Jessica Walston and Ms. Brittany Kramer, students prepared their own prayer books by coloring and cutting out the pages. They will use their personalized booklets every Thursday throughout Lent while they visit the church and participate in the praying the stations.
The stations of the cross or the “Way” of the cross grew out of pilgrimages of the Via Dolorosa (“Sorrowful Way”) in Jerusalem, believed to be the path Jesus walked to his crucifixion.
They call to mind 14 steps on the way to Christ’s death: Pilate condemning Him to death, taking up the cross, falling the first time, meeting His mother, Simon the Cyrene assisting, Veronica wiping His face, falling a second time, meeting the women of Jerusalem, falling a third time, being stripped of garments, being nailed to the cross, Christ’s death, His body presented to Mary, and being laid in the tomb. While not traditionally part of the stations, the Resurrection is sometimes included as a 15th station.
