Camp Kateri Tekakwitha has begun issuing refunds

McCOOL JUNCTION (SNR) – All 2020 summer camps at Camp Kateri Tekakwitha will be canceled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision was announced May 13 in a letter from director Russell Koos.

“After consultation with the Health Department,” he wrote, “we do not see a way forward that ensures the health and safety of campers and volunteers in a residential setting.”

Camp Kateri typically offers three summer experiences: SKY Camp, Catholic Adventure Camp and Leadership Camp for altar servers. The summer rental camps are Campin’ with the Marians and Virtus Veritas, the “Leadership Camp” of the Archdiocese of Omaha.

The canceled camps include all of these events.

Camp Kateri has begun issuing full refunds to registered camp families. The process will be completed by May 31.

The move to cancel was an enormous disappointment to Koos, his staff, and large group of volunteers.

The Diocese of Lincoln purchased the 80-acre property for Camp Kateri in 1999. The facility became the prime location for youth outdoor retreats such as SKY camp which started in 1988 at St. Stephen Parish near Lawrence. The first SKY camp at Camp Kateri for junior high youth was held in 2001.

Now, Koos hires approximately 10-12 seasonal staff each summer, and recruits and trains approximately 200 high school and adult volunteers. Between the five summer programs, he said, Camp Kateri reaches a little over 800 campers in grades 5-12 each summer.

“Outdoor ministry is an important part of a child’s spiritual nourishment,” Koos said. “It provides a memorable setting to connect with God, make positive friendships, and learn more about the Catholic faith. We look forward to the day when children can explore their faith, and the outdoors, at Camp Kateri again.”

The loss of the 2020 season will hurt financially, as well. Approximately 80% of Camp Kateri’s annual operating budget, the letter explained, comes from program fees and camp rentals.

“The crisis will have a devastating impact on our finances” Koos said. He welcomed camp supporters to make a tax-deductible donation of all, or some of the registration fee, before refunds are issued.
