Day event with Fr. Winter on the Book of Job: participation available in person or online

WAVERLY (SNR) - Father Evan Winter will offer a retreat in English and in Spanish Saturday, May 30, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly.

The theme will be “Turning Quarantine into a Retreat with the Book of Job” (Cambiando Cuarantena a un Retiro con el Libro de Job).

The bilingual retreat will look at what to do in times of suffering, how to remain faithful during trials and how this time of quarantine can become an opportunity to turn to God in trust and in worship.

Father Winter recommended the need for some silence in everyone’s lives and said he welcomed the opportunity to do a retreat, citing the quote of Blaise Pascal, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.”

Father Evan Winter grew up in St. Joseph Parish in Lincoln. He attended St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward and Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md. Since his ordination in 2016, his assignments have included North American Martyrs and Cristo Rey parishes and Pius X High School in Lincoln, and diocesan chaplain for the Legion of Mary.

The online retreat will begin May 30 with a 9 a.m. conference and 11 a.m. Mass, followed by 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. conferences, concluding with Benediction. Registration is required to participate in the live-stream, and a free-will donation is asked but not required. Instructions on how to make an at-home retreat and watch the recordings will be provided.

Individuals who attend the retreat in person have a private room and bathroom, and will follow social distancing guidelines with their own table at meals and a designated pew in the chapel for each family. The retreat house staff is disinfecting all surfaces each day, and asks individuals not to attend if they are sick, have been exposed, or are at a high risk. There will be a full refund, or option to transfer to another retreat, if a scheduled participant is unable to attend a retreat.
