DAVID CITY – Aquinas Catholic Middle and High School gave 100 Thanksgiving cards to local nursing homes in David City.

The cards were a product of an Aquinas Makerspace in the library. A library makerspace provides hands-on educational exploration and opportunities for imagination, creativity, innovation and collaboration among students. Mrs. Lisa Lyons, Aquinas librarian, urged students to include a joke, Bible verse, or quote in their Thanksgiving card.

“I’m really proud of the middle-school students,” she said. “They were really involved in helping us reach our goal to give to each resident a Thanksgiving card.”

This was the second makerspace project in the library this year. The first project was mask clips. Mask clips resemble glasses straps: clips are attached to a face mask on either side with a strap in the back. The clips keep masks handy when students can safely remove their masks, like during lunch.

These projects are just the beginning. Aquinas Catholic Library gratefully received a $500 grant from The Walmart Community Grants Team and Facility #885. This grant is given with support to create a positive impact within the community. Lyons said she looks forward to using the grant to provide more makerspace supplies and activities.

“I am looking forward to having supplies for Christmas ornaments and seeing the students utilize the library’s space. Teachers are coming to me with ideas for makerspace activities that support their classes. We will have some great projects coming up,” Mrs. Lyons explained.
