DAVID CITY (SNR) – Over the past year, Aquinas and St. Mary Catholic Schools in David City have gratefully received $75,000 in grants toward technology, to benefit all areas of education.

DAVID CITY, ST. MARY SCHOOL – St. Mary School in David City is using technology to virtually read to their ‘grandparents’ at a local nursing home. Usually, residents are able to come into the school to listen to third-, fourth- and fifth-graders read.

The grants have led toward purchasing iPads, laptops, and document cameras. This technology has been incorporated into reading, math, writing, and English courses.

Three different grants have made these technology improvements possible including the MMP Trust Grant, CARES Funding, and GEER Federal Funding.

Aquinas Catholic Middle and High School used the funding to purchase 10 iPads, 12 laptops, and two document cameras. The new technology provides better opportunities for students to work in the classroom on writing skills, without having to travel to computer labs. The additional devices have also been extremely useful in complying with restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

St. Mary School has added 60 iPads with keyboards, which provides more opportunities for students to improve writing skills inside the classroom. St. Mary students in grades K-5 will benefit from the devices in all areas of learning, not just writing: kindergarten classes use iPads for phonics, math, coding and more. St. Mary uses MAPs testing (math and reading assessments) to monitor growth throughout the year. There are many more opportunities for classes to include technology to assist in their current curriculums.

The additional technology will assist in St. Mary’s goal to becoming Cognia-accredited (formerly AdvancED). Aquinas became Cognia accredited in the summer of 2019.
