Correspondence reminds neighbors ‘we have not forgotten them and continue to keep them in our prayers’

McCOOK (SNR) – Students at St. Patrick School in McCook have celebrated holidays this school year by making cards, letters, and crafts for residents at Hillcrest, Highland Park and Kinship Pointe.

At Halloween, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, the children shared joy and greetings with the fellow community members.

Mrs. Amanda Peterson, who teaches first grade, said she recalled near at Halloween that the students would normally be planning a trick-or-treating visit to area nursing homes and assisted living centers, but they were unable to do so during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I know what a joy these little faces can bring,” she said, “so after some discussion with the other teachers we decided it would be nice for us to share some cheer with our fellow elderly neighbors.”

This launched the sharing of holiday-themed crafts, letters, cards and decorations for the residents to brighten their days. Peterson said the children’s work was creative and enthusiastic.

“I am certain they will put many smiles on the faces of the people they reach,” she said.

But, she said, more importantly, she hoped the correspondence reminded the recipients “we have not forgotten them and continue to keep them in our prayers.”

One fifth-grader wrote in a card at Christmas, “Jesus is with you and he loves you very much! Any time you feel lonely, just pray and think about Jesus.”

“A great reminder for all of us!” Peterson said.
