LINCOLN (SNR) – The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies is now taking registrations for its spring 2021 courses.

The 10-week spring term will feature four new classes, beginning March 8 and concluding May 20 (except for Holy Week). Each two-hour class meets one evening weekly (6:30-8:30 p.m.).

“The Whole in One: A Survey of Every Book of the Bible in One Quarter will be team taught on Mondays.

On Tuesdays, Joshua Burks will teach “Acts and the Letters of Paul—in the Creation to New Creation,” a stream of courses from Genesis to Revelation.
Vern Steiner will teach “Jesus’ Farewell Address (John 13-17): Encountering Our Lord in the Upper Room” on Wednesdays and Chad Steiner will teach “Rediscovering the Kingdom Jesus Established in the Church You Attend” on Thursdays.

All four classes will be recorded and available the following day, including comprehensive study notes, for self-paced viewing by those who register for the online version. In-person registrants will also have free access to the recordings.

“Each of these courses promises a rich and transforming learning opportunity,” said Emmaus president Dr. Vern Steiner. “The Whole in One is designed to help people find their way around in Sacred Scripture by providing a framework that is easy to grasp and a panoramic view of the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation.

He said the course has been especially popular with those people who simply want to become more familiar with the Bible at a basic level.

“In Acts and the Letters of Paul,” Steiner continued, “students will observe how the mission of the Church is an extension of the mission of Christ, and how each of St. Paul’s 13 letters aims to shape the Church more fully into what it is—the Body of Christ.”

This course is part of a three-year “Journey through Scripture from Creation to New Creation”; but students are welcome to join at any time, even if they have not taken the previous courses.

What makes Jesus Farewell Discourse (John 13-17) such a special part of Scripture, Steiner noted, “is the way these chapters reveal the heart of our Lord like nowhere else in Scripture, from His washing the disciples’ feet to His praying to the Father. Our aim in this course will be to sit at Jesus’ feet as attentive disciples, letting His intimate words of self-disclosure shape us for love and service and glory.”

“We are excited to offer Rediscovering the Kingdom Jesus Established in the Church You Attend,” Steiner explained, “because it will engage one of the most urgent and challenging questions all of us are facing in the contemporary culture: What does it mean to be Christian and to be American (or a citizen of any country) at the same time, especially when this ‘dual allegiance’ occasions a tension?”

He said the course will investigate “specific passages in God’s Word which are intended to shape our understanding of the relationship between the Church as God’s Kingdom and the secular kingdoms in which it finds itself.”

Additional details, including full course descriptions, cost, location, and online registration form are available at www.emmausinstitute.net.

In addition to the 10-week courses, the Institute offers half-day seminars in which the Emmaus teaching staff address a timely topic from a biblical perspective. The next quarterly seminar focusing on the Holy Spirit in Church and Christian life will be hosted at St. Peter Parish in Lincoln April 10. Additional information and registration details will be released at a later date.
