LINCOLN (SNR) – Over the last three months, more than 100 individuals began helping Lincoln Diocese Catholic School families in need by donating to the Good Shepherd Scholarship Fund.

The new scholarship program, which began in 2019, is providing financial support to Catholic school families across the entire diocese.

“We have received support from a wide array of people, grandparents of students, alumni of our schools, and even individuals outside of our diocese,” said Nathan Seger, who helps raise funds for the scholarship. “We even had an anonymous donor from outside the country who was so impressed with the program that he made a $100,000 gift,” Seger added.

Seger said the increase in donors is only the first step in creating a more robust program.

“We have had a good start, but we need to keep moving to better help our parents and students.”

Many parents of students throughout the diocese have expressed gratitude for the scholarship program. “The Good Shepherd Scholarship has been such a blessing for us,” said a mother in Plattsmouth. “I would not [otherwise] be able to afford tuition for my sons.

“It is so important to me to have my boys being taught faith, kindness, compassion, and all the ways of God,” she continued. “We are so thankful for this scholarship and the opportunity to continue their education in a Catholic school.”

Seger encourages anyone interested in joining the fund to do so.

“I am looking for the next 100 new donors in the coming months,” he said. “We still need more to reach our goals.”

Seger said he believes a unique opportunity exists now due to the recent stimulus payments.

“I’m encouraging those who received a stimulus payment and are financially able to consider prayerfully tithing a portion to help.”

It is estimated that more than 20,000 households registered in the Lincoln Diocese received a stimulus payment.

“Imagine the impact if one-half of those households were able to give between a tenth or a quarter of their payment to support good Catholic causes,” he said.

Seger mentioned that he knows some people who plan to tithe a portion to their parish and a portion to the scholarship.

“It is a great idea, help your parish with a portion and help Catholic School families with a portion.”
