WAVERLY (SNR) – Men and women of all ages are invited to a scriptural retreat with Father Jay Buhman, April 23-25 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House, entitled “It Is God Who Invites You: Come and See.”
“This retreat will be a chance to make the gospel stories come alive, much like when one makes a pilgrimage to the Holy Land,” said Father Buhman.
Father Buhman explained how the Christian life is wrapped up in the liturgical year.
“We move from the Incarnation at Christmas, to Our Lord’s public ministry and His call to discipleship in Ordinary Time, to the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection in Lent and Easter,” he said.
Father Buhman said the retreat is an opportunity to be aware how the Lord invites all people “to come and see Jesus.”
“We start with the Incarnation and the reality of God’s love,” he said. “We experience His invitation and enter again the life of a disciple. Then we call to mind the reality of our redemption in the Paschal Mystery.”
Retreatants will meditate on the four gospels and are encouraged to bring their bibles. Other books for further reading on this topic include “To Know Christ Jesus” by Frank Sheed, “The Lord” by Romano Guardini, or “In His Likeness” by Edward Sri.
Father Buhman said he recommended retreats for anyone who is serious about being a disciple of Jesus Christ.
“A retreat once a year offers us the opportunity to take stock of our relationship with the Lord and renew the life of discipleship we desire to have with Him,” he said. “It’s a time to hear His voice as He calls us to Himself, to renew our commitment as we regularly put before our mind and heart this relationship, to be chosen once again.”
Father Buhman is pastor of St. Mary Parish in David City and Assumption in Appleton. A priest for 17 years, Father Buhman served as an assistant in Lincoln and pastor in Bellwood, as well as teaching at Pius X High School in Lincoln and Aquinas High School in David City. He also served as a national chaplain for Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) for three years.
