DENTON (SNR) – A 30-member cast and crew from multiple Lincoln-area parishes will perform a play this fall celebrating the life of newly beatified Bl. Michael McGivney.

“The Knights: Father Michael McGivney and the Founding of the Knights of Columbus” will be performed Oct. 14-17 at St. Mary Church in Denton.

The needs of immigrant families and those suffering the loss of their family’s breadwinner led Blessed Michael McGivney of the Archdiocese of Hartford, Conn., to found the Knights of Columbus in 1882. He was beatified Oct. 31, 2020 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, and his feast day is observed Aug. 13 in the Archdiocese of Hartford.

In an apostolic letter from Pope Francis read at the beatification Mass, the Holy Father said it was McGivney’s “zeal for the proclamation of the Gospel and generous concern for his brothers and sisters,” that “made him an outstanding witness of Christian solidarity and fraternal assistance.”

Today, the Knights of Columbus organization McGivney started has 1.9 million members around the world, committed to the mission of empowering Catholic men to live their faith at home, in their parish, at work and in their community.

The play to be performed Oct. 14-17 is written and directed by Patsy Urbanovsky, a member of St. Mary Parish in Denton.

“Blessed Michael McGivney offers a great example of looking around at the people and situations placed in his life at the time, and responding to their needs,” Urbanovsky said. “He didn’t start out with big dreams to start a huge organization; he simply responded to the needs of those around him. We can all relate to, and learn from, his example.

Performances are Oct. 14, 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. Admission is free-will offering. Seating is limited and tickets must be reserved in advance. Reserve tickets online at: frassati.eventbrite.com or call Sandra at 402-937-4467.
