WAVERLY (SNR) - Each year, Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly hosts an Ash Wednesday Recollection.

Open to both men and women, this year’s reflection will be held at the retreat house Ash Wednesday, March 2, and it will also be available online.

Msgr. John Perkinton invites participants to take a break from distractions and come to focus on some spiritual practices that draw one closer to God, as he presents “Why Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving?”

Msgr. Perkinton is superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Lincoln, and of Villa Marie Home and School for Exceptional Children, and chaplain for the Marian Sisters of the Diocese of Lincoln.

“Jesus speaks of these spiritual disciplines in Matthew Chapter 6 which the Church encourages us to adopt each Lent,” he explained. “However, sometimes we don’t understand the Christian meaning of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—how they are more than just mindfulness, dieting and charity.”

The Day of Recollection will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. It includes conferences, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the rosary, and stations of the cross, confessions, and of course, Mass with ashes.

To attend the Ash Wednesday Recollection at the retreat house in Waverly, advance registration at the website, goodcounselretreat.org is encouraged but not required.

Participants should arrive between 9 and 9:30 a.m. for registration. The cost for the day is $10. Those who attend should bring a meatless sack lunch; drinks are provided.
