WAHOO (SNR) – Students from Saunders County Catholic Schools and area parishes are raising funds to attend an international robotics tournament.

Wahoo Robotics/Saunders County Robotics is a co-op program with students from Wahoo Public and Bishop Neumann schools, as well as others throughout the county.

The club supports First Lego League for students in grades K-4 and VEX Robotics for those in grades 5– 12.

The team starts building their robots early in the school year then proceed to compete in several tournaments which provides robotic STEM experiences in engineering, construction, programming, and professional teamwork in partnership with Wahoo Public Middle and High School, Bishop Neumann Jr.-Sr. High, St. John Nepomucene School in Weston, St. Wenceslaus School in Wahoo, and Saunders County 4-H. The club recently won the George Beadle award from the Wahoo Chamber of Commerce.

Three teams from the club qualified at the 2022 VEX Robotics Middle School State Championship, and now move on to the VEX World Tournament in Dallas where they will compete against more than 400 other teams from around the world.

All teams will represent Bishop Neumann and the robotic club. The students are members of diocesan parishes: Ss. Mary and Joseph in Valparaiso (Dominic Benes and Carter Chmelka), St. Mary in Davey (Alex Gokie), Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Plasi (Cyril Kavan), St. Joseph in Colon (Owen Sanderson), and St. Wenceslaus in Wahoo (Ty Hurley and Joe Stava).

The club operates on club member fees, donations and sponsorships, so with the high cost of $1,200 per team to enter the competition, the members are seeking donations. Donations can be sent to Bishop Neumann, Attn: Robotics at 202 S Linden St., Wahoo, NE 68066 or via Venmo at @WahooAreaRobotFund.
