LINCOLN – S.T.A.G.E. student theatre will present the musical comedy “A Geek Tragedy” June 23-26.

The production, performed by students ages 10-18, will be presented at St. Teresa Church (Kaczmarek Hall), 735 S. 36th St., in Lincoln.

Set in ancient Greece, the Athenian theater is threatened by “Socracees” and her three students (“geeks”), who believe there is only One True God. Two meddling directors send the geeks on a journey to find the Golden Lease, while actors of the theater re-create the creatures from Homer’s “Odyssey,” which try to lure the geeks into a disastrous end. Using the philosophy of Socracees, the geeks look for the five proofs of the One God (Aquinas). Meanwhile, Socracees stands on trial for misleading the youth and trying to destroy the belief in the gods, but fortunately the geeks arrive in time to save the day.

Lee Hotovy, S.T.A.G.E. founder, writer, and director, said “A Geek Tragedy” is a story that mimics the true history of Greece wrapped around Socrates and his students (such as Plato) which lead to his final tragic ending. However, rather than being a tragedy, like so many Greek plays, the Geek” story ends with the uplifting message of faith. She said the show comes complete with a Trojan horse and many mythological creatures. She also said the unique musical is a way to use creativity, dance, and music while bringing to life the famous teachings of Aquinas on the five proofs of One True God.

Other S.T.A.G.E. contributors include musical director, Felicity Suelter and choreographer, Lydia Hotovy.

Hotovy founded S.T.A.G.E. (Student Theater and Godly Evangelization) in 1999, to provide a creative outlet for children of all ages. The troupe typically produces three original shows each year, with a larger production during the summer, involving children from the city of Lincoln and the surrounding area.

“A Geek Tragedy” will be performed 7 p.m. June 23, 24, 25 and at 2 p.m. June 26. Doors open 30 minutes before showtime. The show is approximately two hours with intermission and concessions.
