LINCOLN (SNR) – The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies in Lincoln announced its new lineup of 10-week and five-week, in-person and online classes beginning after Labor Day.
The list includes six new classes; six new opportunities to grow deeper and stronger in the faith.
From its inception in 2019 and at Bishop Conley’s request, Emmaus has featured a unique three-year journey through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation entitled “Creation to New Creation.”
“As we enter our fourth year of operation and begin a new cycle, we are able to offer a new and improved version of our core program,” said Emmaus president Dr. Vern Steiner. “I am unaware of anything quite like it.”
He said they designed and developed the program “from scratch,” with special attention to accessibility – which means the courses are pitched at the right level for participants; flexibility – meaning people can join at any time; and affordability – “the best bang for the buck, with no one turned away for lack of funds.”
Emmaus teachers prepare their own lectures, provide handout materials, and present God’s Word in a way that is engaging and faithful to its nature as the living voice of the Lord, Steiner said.
“Above all, we show how all 73 biblical books contribute to the fullness of God’s revelation in Christ, in the interest of enkindling a more fervent love for our Lord through a biblically informed understanding of what God says from beginning to end.”
Students who complete the program are awarded with a certificate acknowledging their achievement.
The featured fall course in the “Creation to New Creation” program will be “The Pentateuch” (Genesis through Deuteronomy), taught by Chad Steiner on Monday evenings, beginning Sept. 12 and ending Nov. 14.
Additional course offerings for the fall semester include: “Reading the Bible Like the Fathers of the Church,” held Tuesdays Sept. 6 through Nov. 15, taught by Chad Steiner; “Latin I: Introduction to Latin Grammar,” Wednesdays Sept. 7 through Nov. 16, taught by Mike Katalenich; “Heaven, Help the Home: God’s Blueprint for Marriage and Family,” Wednesdays, Sept. 7 through Nov.16, taught by Vern Steiner, “Following the Way: A Biblical View of Discipleship ,” Thursdays, Sept. 8 through Oct. 6 taught by Joshua Burks; and “From Discipleship to Apostolic Mission: A Study in Acts,” Thursdays Oct. 20 through Nov. 17, taught by Joshua Burks.
Course descriptions and registration details are available at www.emmausinstitute.net. All classes meet one evening weekly for two hours, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and are held in the Emmaus classroom in the Calvert Office Park, 3601 Calvert, except “Heaven, Help the Home,” which will meet at St. Michael Church in Lincoln. All classes are available in-person or online except “Heaven, Help the Home” and “Latin I.” In-person students have free access to the online recordings.
In a recent published statement, Bishop Conley wrote, “I particularly encourage priests to send teachers and other ministry leaders from their parishes to study at Emmaus in order to become more fully equipped to be effective ambassadors of the Gospel in their own parishes and schools.”
To the bishop’s endorsement Dr. Steiner added, “As the culture around us continues to drift farther and farther from the truth, and Catholics sometimes wander from the faith for lack of deep anchor, the need has never been greater for God’s people to become more grounded in Scripture and more in love with the Savior we meet there.”
Dr. Steiner said he joins Bishop Conley in urging all pastors to encourage their parishioners to take advantage of the growth opportunities Emmaus provides.
“The blessings of a more biblically informed, faith-filled laity will abound in the life of the parish and the family and in our witness to the world.”
Emmaus will also offer a half-day seminar on the Eucharist in Scripture at St. Patrick Parish in Lincoln Saturday, Oct. 22, with details to follow.
