WAHOO (SNR) – St. Wenceslaus School in Wahoo started the new school year Aug. 10, utilizing a number of new spaces.

An addition to the school, blessed and dedicated by Bishop James Conley in May, includes daycare space for before- and after-school care and summer care, as well as space for the pre-kindergarten class. The addition includes a music room for vocal and band classes, a new space for the library, a larger computer room, and a multi-purpose room. The multi-purpose room boasts a full-service kitchen, eliminating the students’ daily walk to Neumann High School – a block away – for lunch.

The multi-purpose room is available for use for parish activities, meetings, and CCD classes, and is also where the students and staff eat each day.

Excitement is great among the students, parents, faculty and parishioners, but one detail is drawing out the anticipation: kitchen and technology equipment have not yet arrived.

Until the equipment is in place, lunches are prepared in the Neumann High School cafeteria and transported to St. Wenceslaus School.

Parishioner Kristy Fritzinger helped gather and contact volunteers to aid lunch room supervisor Becca Lanik. Approximately 15 volunteers have stepped forward to either work one day each week or be “on call.”

About one week before school started, volunteers met with Lanik, principal Mike Weiss and Carolyn Haberman, the lunch supervisor for Saunders Catholic Schools. They discussed a typical day’s routine and serving portions, as well as background checks and other expectations of diocesan volunteers. Volunteers help out each day from about 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Two more weekly volunteers are needed to make the lunch program run smoothly, as well as substitutes. Volunteers at St. Wenceslaus School also help with recess duty, listen to young students read, and assist with special classroom projects. St. Wenceslaus School opened in 1910 and currently serves more than 280 students in grades pre-K through 6.
