LINCOLN - Calix, an organization which addresses the spiritual needs of Catholics recovering from addiction, will mark its anniversary.

The Lincoln Chapter of Calix began in Lincoln on a Sunday evening 42 years ago. The first meeting was held in the boiler room of Blessed Sacrament Church in Lincoln. Msgr. Charles Keenan was the chaplain and served Calix until his death in 2010.

The chapter will attend 5:30 p.m. Mass Saturday, Oct. 22 at Blessed Sacrament Church. Festivities will follow in Keenan Hall with current members sharing their experiences in the chapter.

All individuals and families—those who are addicts themselves and those who have family or friends still suffering or in recovery—are invited. Laity, religious, or clergy concerned with the pandemic of addiction are especially invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Calix International was founded in the 1940s by a priest in St. Paul, Minn. Alcoholics in his parish met after Saturday morning Mass to discuss the readings for the upcoming Sunday and how their faith melded with the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The name “Calix” (Latin for chalice) and the motto, “Going from the cup that inebriates to the Cup that sanctifies” were adopted.
