A movie featuring the popular Camino de Santiago will premiere in select theaters nationwide for one night only this month.
“Santiago: The Camino Within” is scheduled to be shown in movie theaters in the Lincoln and Omaha areas March 28.
The movie portrays the spiritual journey of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, the ancient route to the burial place of the apostle St. James at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The physically demanding and spiritually challenging trek has fascinated people all over the world since the Middle Ages.
Bishop James Conley of the Diocese of Lincoln has walked a portion of the Camino three times in the past decade.
“Over the years, I have seen several good films and documentaries on the Camino to Santiago de Compostela in Spain,” Bishop Conley said. “The new film, ‘Santiago: The Camino Within’ is the best film on the Camino I have seen to date.”
Having made this journey of faith several times himself, Bishop Conley said he appreciated the portrayal of both the internal and external journeys that take place.
“This new film takes you deep inside the spiritual dimension of this historic pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James the Apostle. The spirituality, music, cinematography, beauty, and Catholicity of this new film are outstanding in every way.”
Bishop Donald Hying of Madison, Wisc., is narrator of the film.
“He is also a pilgrim walking along the Camino and takes the viewer with him as he interacts with fellow pilgrims along the way,” Bishop Conley said.
“The film captures both the astonishing physical beauty and the compelling spiritual attraction of walking the ancient Way of St. James in Spain,” said Bishop Hying. “Like contemplating a sunset, savoring a powerful poem, or gazing on a masterful work of art, ‘Santiago: The Camino Within’ will feed your soul.”
Bishop Conley joined Archbishop Paul Coakley of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City and Bishop James Wall of the Diocese of Gallup on a trek across part of the Camino last summer. The three of them, along with Bishop Hying, will hold a virtual discussion on the film at 3 p.m. Central Friday, March 24. Kathryn Jean Lopez of the National Review will moderate the discussion. “Santiago: The Camino Within” is scheduled to be shown at Lincoln Grand Cinemas at 7 p.m. CT March 28. Tickets for the one-time-only showing can be purchased online through fathomevents.com/events/Santiago-The-Camino-Within/theaters, or at participating theater box offices.
Bishop Conley said the movie serves as a very good Lenten meditation.
“I highly recommend this film for anyone who is interested in this beautiful and ancient story of faith.”
