Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly will launch a year of celebration May 24.
The Catholic Center of the Diocese of Lincoln was dedicated May 24, 1964, by Cardinal Joseph Ritter, Archbishop of St. Louis. The cardinal blessed all three entities of the Catholic Center that day: Marycrest Motherhouse, Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House and Villa Marie Home and School for Exceptional Children.
Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House invites all to celebrate the day the grounds and chapel were officially blessed and set aside for divine worship Wednesday, May 24.
“This dedication day established the retreat house as holy ground, a sacred place where the Christian community gathers to hear the word of God, to offer intercession and praise to Him and celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass,” said Father Gary Coulter, current director of the retreat house.
An open house will be held May 24 in thanksgiving for the years Our Lady of Good Counsel has served the diocese, and the thousands of lives transformed through retreats.
The Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m., followed by tea and rolls. In the afternoon there will be an ice cream social from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., so people may stop by after school or work.
This is a day to be reminded of how the chapel of Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House is a visible reminder of the pilgrim Church on earth and it reflects the Church dwelling in Heaven, Father Coulter explained.
“One can feel the prayers of countless thousands who have been in this chapel, making it holy by the presence of so many prayers and sacrifices that have been offered here,” he said.
Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House offers 50 single rooms, each with a private bath, and a peaceful atmosphere of prayer and recollection, situated on its spacious acreage near Waverly.
Upcoming retreats at Our Lady of Good Counsel include “God’s Beautiful Beloved” 24-hour women’s retreat with Sister Anne Marie Walsh, SOLT May 12-13; 4-Day or 8-Day “Ignatian Directed Retreat” June 21-25, 25-29 or 21-29 with Father Christopher Barak or Father Gary Coulter; “Women’s TLM Spiritual Exercises” June 30-July 2 with Father Jeffrey Jambon, L.C.; and “TLM preached Spiritual Exercises” with Father Jeffrey Jambon, L.C. for women June 30-July 2, and for men July 7-9.
