All are invited to Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House’s upcoming retreat, “Masses and Tears,” with Father Jay Buhman Dec. 13-15.
“This retreat will speak specifically to the heartbreak and circumstances of one who greatly desires the return of a loved one to the practice of the Catholic faith,” said Father Buhman.
The foundation of the retreat will be the “Masses and Tears” devotion for those who have a loved one who has left the faith. Father Buhman established the devotion more than 10 years ago, but this is the first retreat dedicated to “Masses and Tears.” Father Buhman said he is excited for people to be assured that, through the witness of St. Monica, God will do the same for them and draw closer to God in this circumstance.
St. Monica is famous for her persevering and fervent prayer for her son, St. Augustine, leading to his conversion. Her example has much to teach about intercessory prayer and abiding faith in God alone.
Father Buhman said the Dec. 13-15 retreat “will also speak to the many ways God draws attention to our own personal relationship with Him in the midst of that heartbreak.”
He explained that the sanctity of St. Monica is the product of God’s love and life within her, which we are called to emulate.
Father Buhman was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Lincoln in 2004. He served as an assistant pastor his first six years at various parishes, including St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He also served as pastor at two parishes in eastern Nebraska. In 2015, he was released from the Diocese of Lincoln to serve as national chaplain for the Fellowship of Catholic University Students in Denver for three years. He later served in David City at St. Mary Parish, and is currently pastor of All Saints in Holdrege.
Other upcoming retreats at Good Counsel are “The Five Marian Dogmas and Consecration to the Immaculate” with Father Elias Mary, F.I. Dec. 1-3; and four- or eight-day Ignatian directed retreat with Father Gary Coulter, Father Christopher Barak and Matt Simmons Dec. 29-Jan. 1, Jan 2-5, and Dec. 29-Jan. 5.
